Morah Hindy Levi and Her Inspiring Chumash Class!
This week, we’re shining the spotlight on Morah Hindy Levi, a dynamic and dedicated Chumash teacher in Level 7. With her creative teaching methods, love for Torah, and passion for inspiring her students, Morah Hindy makes the Chumash come alive in meaningful and relatable ways.
Bringing Parshat Bamidbar to Life
In their recent unit, Parshat Bamidbar, the class delved into the intricate layout of Bnei Yisrael's encampment during their journey through the desert. This wasn’t just about reading and translating the psukim—Morah Hindy guided her students to truly visualize and recreate the structure described in Perek Alef, Beis, and Gimmel.
Each student—Lia, Sophia, Zeesa, and Chaviva—built a 3D model representing the divisions of the camp. The project showcased:
The four directional camps, each made up of three shevatim.
The Mishkan in the center, surrounded by its own distinct camp.
The special placement of the Leviim and Kohanim, counted separately to highlight their unique roles.
Even the placement of the cattle and belongings within the encampment.
Through this hands-on project, the girls gained a deep understanding of the organization and sanctity of the encampment and how every detail served to reflect Hashem's presence in their midst. The Mishkan wasn't just the center physically—it was the heart of Bnei Yisrael spiritually, and this class brought that concept vividly to life.
A Quick Q&A with Morah Hindy Levi
We had the chance to sit down with Morah Hindy and learn more about her journey, her teaching philosophy, and what she loves most about JOS!
How many years have you worked at JOS?
This is my fifth year teaching at JOS, and every year has been more meaningful than the last!
What’s the most rewarding part of your job?
Seeing the students truly enjoy and connect to what they’re learning. When they walk away with inspiration and a deeper understanding, it’s the best feeling.
When you’re not teaching, what do you enjoy doing?
I love cooking, reading, and yes, singing in the shower!
What’s your must-have item for teaching at JOS?
Definitely coffee—and I couldn’t survive without Mushki Lipskier’s monthly planner to keep everything organized.
What’s your favorite subject to teach?
Without a doubt, Chumash. I’m fascinated by the language, the nuances, and the timeless lessons it contains. It’s our Torah—we have to know what it says! Teaching my students the skills to open a Chumash, find their place, and truly understand it is a gift I hope they’ll carry for life.
What’s one thing most people don’t know about you?
I’m a British-born, English-speaking shlucha living on shlichus in a Spanish-speaking country, with a side shlichus in Russian. It’s quite the adventure!
What do you love most about JOS?
The incredible sense of community and the opportunity to inspire young learners every day.
A Memorable Class and an Incredible Teacher
Thanks to Morah Hindy Levi, Parshat Bamidbar wasn’t just another lesson—it was an immersive journey into the desert alongside Bnei Yisrael. The 3D encampment models weren’t just art projects; they were an opportunity for the students to connect to Torah in a hands-on, memorable way.
Thank you, Morah Hindy, for inspiring the next generation of learners and leaders with your creativity, passion, and dedication!
